HALIFAX—Nova Scotians who lined up outside the province’s only legal pot purveyor on the first day of legalization Wednesday purchased more than $660,000 worth of product.
Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation spokesperson Beverley Ware said from Wednesday’s 10 a.m. opening at its 12 cannabis retail locations across Nova Scotia until closing time, they conducted 12,810 transactions totalling just over $660,000. Almost $47,000 of those sales were online.

On Wednesday in Halifax, all four NSLC cannabis retail locations were bustling all day with customers waiting in line right up until closing time to make their first legal pot purchases. On Thursday morning, Ware said they experienced short lineups at only two stores — the Halifax store on Joseph Howe Drive and the store in Sydney River.
“We did run out of certain packages of a few strains yesterday but were able to offer customers comparable replacements,” Ware said, noting on Thursday afternoon that she was still trying to determine which strains had proved so popular.
As for concerns that there may not be enough cannabis to go around for pot enthusiasts eager to puff in the province, Ware said they’re working to ensure that doesn’t happen.

“We continue to receive deliveries including a good shipment yesterday (Wednesday) morning,” she said.
“The situation will be fluid for some time but we’re working hard to get the product processed as quickly as we can when it arrives and delivered to our stores so that it is available to customers.”
But late Thursday afternoon, the NSLC issued a statement to its cannabis customers via Twitter advising them there are no oils or capsules available “right now.” In addition, the provincial Crown corporation said small package sizes and pre-rolls “are in limited supply.”
“More inventory is coming soon. Our employees will provide waiting customers with as much product info as possible. Stay tuned for inventory updates,” the tweet stated.
The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) is the only authorized retailer of cannabis in the province, and weed can be purchased by anyone of legal age at 12 designated NSLC stores across N.S. or online for home delivery. The downtown Halifax NSLC on Clyde St. is the only stand-alone cannabis store, which will have the most variety and amount of products.
