Default What is Charlie thinking, no HBO and Cinamax?

Not sure what Charlie is thinking not paying HBO and Cinamax.

It not like these premium channels are locals.

Won't most subscribes jump ship and move to another provider? Can't really see Charlie wining this one. So I guess they are OK losing subscribers. Even if Dish has the best price probably 25% of their sub could care less about cost and just want good channels.

    What is Charlie thinking?

Charlie has held customers hostage before.

This time is a little different as the parent company who owns Direc tv now owns those networks and they have raised the prices on new contracts....I'm sure in an effort to decrease competition. It's actually bs on both parts. It's always the customers who get screwed in the end.

It's not DTV that has caused the HBO and Cinamax drop out on Dish, but AT&T who owns DTV and HBO/Cinamax, when AT&T acquired DTV a few years ago Dish complained about it to the FCC, saying it was the start of a monopoly, as AT&T owns phone lines, cable company's, some TV stations and then would own a very large DBS satellite system, this is the start of a monopoly.

So instead of just raising the cost of service, and renewing the contracts they dropped all HBO and Cinamax service to Dish, this hoping Dish's customers would jump ship and go to DTV for those channels, and hopefully in time cause Dish to go out of business due to loss of revenue, thus leaving them will all the satellite coverage for the US.

Not much Dish can do about this, the only thing that may help is to complain to the FCC about it if you are a Dish subscriber, I have as I think this is totally unfair to Dish customers.

Wow I am glad I made this post. I had no idea what was going on with the ownership and such. I guess I read about a few years ago but did not put 2+2 together.

It does seem like dik is being treated unfairly. I thought it was Charlie being cheap again LOL.

I'm not down south so thanks for all the info from all of you in this post

    Terryl,

Are you saying AT&T will not provide the service to Dik? This can't be correct, especially in the USA you have good protection against that I thought. Can't Charlie sue Dave... I mean AT&T then?

When negotiating a new contract or renewing one for providing programming, the provider/owner of that programming can dump or not to renew the contract of whomever he/she/it wants.

AT&T didn't like Dish for commenting about the merger or acquisition of DTV, so they just waited out the end of the contract for providing that programming to Dish and told Dish to go kick rocks.

Wow I din't think it was possible that one company in the same businesses could withhold services from another. Up here they made the big telco's share their fiber lines with the cable companies, of coarse at reasonable market value.

I just find it wrong or monopolistic for AT&T to do that, it upsets the competition.
