Default Neil Peart, Drummer for Rush, Dies at 67

Rush had a loyal worldwide fan base and sold millions of records. Mr. Peart, who was also the band’s primary lyricist, was among the most admired drummers in rock.

Neil Peart, the pyrotechnical drummer and high-concept lyricist for the Canadian progressive-rock trio Rush, died on Jan. 7 in Santa Monica, Calif. The cause was brain cancer, according to a statement from Elliot Mintz, a spokesman for the family.
Rush was formed in 1968 but found its long-term identity — as the trio of Geddy Lee on vocals, keyboards and bass, Alex Lifeson on guitars and Mr. Peart on drums — after Mr. Peart replaced the band’s founding drummer, John Rutsey, in 1974.
Mr. Peart’s lyrics transformed the band’s songs into elaborate suites exploring science fiction, magic and philosophy, often with the individualist and libertarian sentiments that informed songs like “Tom Sawyer” and “Freewill.” And Mr. Peart’s drumming was at once intricate and explosive, pinpointing odd meters and expanding the band’s power-trio dynamics.

    Very sorry about the news
I feel like I had learned a little about Neil because of his writing. dishuser turned me on to him as a drummer and
then when I was reading about him I found he was a writer.

    One of his quotes...

“The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them.
    I shall use my time.”
― Neil Peart, Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road

Neil lost his wife and daughter within a year of each other and he struggled greatly... hence....Travels on the Healing Road

They played at our high school Friday nights a few times when I went to Northview Heights Collegiate in Toronto in 1973 and 1974 I bought albums in the hall outside the gym after they played lol

Wow now that goes way back. I remember the Gassworks, never saw Rush in there but Goddo, Coney Hatch, singer from Foot in Cold Water, Talas to mention a few. Rush played my high school in 1974 or 1975 I believe, I was to young but my older brother was not and saw them. Emery CI.

I was lucky to see Rush at the Spruce Villa Hotel in Whitby, On. Canada, as small bar in a small town east of Toronto in the 70's.

So hard to earn so easily burned
    In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
    It's a measure of a life
The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect,
The way you live, the gifts that you give
    In the fullness of time,
It's the only return that you expect”

I've watched all NFL games this weekend and as far as i can tell, they all have played a Rush song just before first commercial break.

Nice silent tribute from the networks and NFL.
