One of my biggest recommendations as a firefighter: Shut your door at night
The easiest and most effective way to protect yourself from fire is shutting the door. Shut it at night. If you see fire, and cannot escape, shut the door.
When I enter through a window to perform a rescue, first thing I do is shut the door.
It takes an incredibly long time for fire to burn completely through something. With today's technology and training firefighter are hitting the fire well before it can work through a door.
The other big thing, aside from fire taking a while to get through a door, is the smoke. Many victims of fire perish due to smoke inhalation long before they are burnt. And then there are those who woke up with time to escape, but were unable to due to the smoke disorienting them.
