Piracy is now being viewed as a criminal issue.

Recently both the Nitro IPTV service and USTV GO have both been shut down and in the case of Nitro, the owners are facing a $100 million judgment against them.

So it states it's now viewed as a criminal issue and backs that up with giving two recent examples of civil cases.

There are criminal violations in Canada for piracy but rarely have been used and the penalties handed out have been quite weak.

Given the choice, if you don't care about having a criminal record being charge criminally in Canada might be a better option than a 100 million dollar judgment.

Though criminal penalties can change if a judge decides to by pass previous case law and make a more meaningful deterrent.

Man, did you ever butcher that article.

If you read the entire paragraph, that you cut the conclusion from, you would see that 2 examples were given that were criminal.

As for you advice that it might be better in Canada to be charged criminally, you might want to rethink that advice. A criminal conviction would all but guarantee a subsequent civil suit. There is nothing to prevent them from pursuing you with a civil action after your crimal conviction and it can be used against you.

what does that have to do with what I posted ?

are you saying that a person can't be pursued in a civil suit after they are found guilty of criminal charges ?

or are you saying that he didn't butcher the article ?

then you should know, that if you are found guilty of a criminal offense, it can be used against you and will all but guarantee a civil judgement against you, if the offended party pursues it.

Show me where he basically said that.

He is clearly saying that it might be in your interest to be charged criminally in an attempt to get out of a 100 million judgement. A judgement that would only be awarded in a civil suit ... but like I said, that criminal conviction would all but guarantee a subsequent civil suit.
