    Default XRS 4500 Catchup & Timeshift

    It seems as though catchup & timeshift is not working since about mid Dec 2024 beta update. Sorry I don’t have the previous version but there have been about 3 more updates since and the unit is currently at v20220919 and current IPTV version v5.0.946

    I can confirm that the catchup and timeshift work on these servers using a different IPTV platform loaded on the buzztv unit. So I believe the problem is within the buzztv app itself.

    Also notice that the loading of the server data on startup is really slow. I’m seeing 4-5 mins just to start up.


    For troubleshooting I’ve cleared caches on all apps, VPN, and no vpn, power resets, primary and secondary player but Nothing gets it working.

    Hoping for a solution

    Can't comment about timeshift, since I don't use it.
    But 5.0.946 has broken catch-up on wicked for me too (tested on my 2x xrs4900 and my E2). I have already reported it to buzz last week, and they said they would look into it.

    Temporarily I have installed smarters on my main boxes I use and I launch smarters when I want to check something on catchup. And that works for now.

    I do not however have any slowness in loading server data. What is your EPG source set to (xml or server) ? Mine are all set to server (just for reference).

    Just switched mine over to server from xml.

    Starting from cold, the box might be a little bit faster with “server” setting on the guide.
    Channel changes are quicker.

    @Dishuser what stream type do you have set? Default, M3U/HLS,TS ?

    Looking through all of the setting, I’ve discovered that I had Secondary player selected, switching back to Primary has now restored catchup on channels that don’t offer timeshift. I believe that I could select force catchup using usb storage on channels that have catchup. And that would solve that problem while the timeshift function isn’t working.

    I’d say, the only problem here is “time-shift” not catchup as I indicated in the beginning.

    Hopefully the problem can be replicated by buzztv so a fix can be sent out.

    I haven't checked on my 5 series boxes, but on the 4 series boxes (at least on both of xrs4900 and the E2), I checked late last week, and with the latest update, auto is HLS as you mentioned (as it has been in the past). But when I try using catchup, I check my panel, and it uses mpegts_arc (previously it would use hls_arc). So it fails and just keeps trying.

    Tomorrow I'll check my classic and/or X5.

    EDIT: I just tried it again on my 4900.

    Only 2 channels I got to work as expected was CA: City TV Monteal and CA: CITY TV Toronto
    The following channels, seem to start to stream, but last about 5 or 6 seconds, and they freeze, and no matter how long I wait, they do not continue.
    • CA: COTTAGE LIFE TV
    • CA: LIFETIME
    • CA: CTV NATURE
    • US: CBS (WCBS) NEW YORK NY
    • US: COMEDY CENTRAL FHD


    If it was just a single box, I'd day maybe time for a reset. But it is 3 boxes. And on one of them I use catch-up quite often.

    I think it is a mix of server glitch in the stream and the updated player. When I tried to play some of them using smarters, some seem to play fine (which hang pretty quicklyunder buzztv), but I do notice some glitching in the beginning of the stream. In 1 case, even smarters would hang, but if I start the catchup and then forward for about 3 minutes (to skip the initial glitches), then it plays fine.

    Anyhow, guess a little more testing is needed...

    The description of start then freeze events are exactly what I’m seeing as well.

    Is the panel sending out a TS stream? Or HLS ?

    If TS then would it work to change that setting?

    All in all the system has a bug.

    Well,

    The problem with time shift & catchup has not magically fixed its self. Best I can tell is that v946 on the buzztv 4500 is the problem.

    Here’s hoping that buzz support has a bit of time to spare toward fixing the problem. Or if not offer up a solution that could allow the previous software version that worked. I believe it was v938 .

    @Buzztv Is there any interest in fixing the xrs4500 update scr3w-up?

    Very rarely works on both my 4900 boxes ever since the last update. And I tried on my X5 earlier this week,. and rarely works either.

    I only have wicked that has catchup so I can't compare on other servers however.

    However I don't know if the issue is the boxes (X5 was hard reset recently), or server. I used to be able to at least use the wicked apk (the smarters version) even after the last update, and it used to usually play, but even that does not work any more (which is why I was wondering if it was server). I tried as recently as last night around midnight, and both BuzzTV on 4900 and wicked apk both did not play. I typically use it on the 2 CBS catchup channels, abc locals, and City TV (Montreal and Toronto).

    I ran out of ideas.
