As usual in SW Ontario during the summer months we get a lot of high wind quick storms tornado like damage to our roofs. I`ve been doing contract work for over 40 yrs and I`ve noticed something this season quite different from other seasons and I`m wondering how many, if any, of our members have had any problems in this area.
Insurance companies have been flat outright denying claims by most all homeowners citing "age related damage" and quickly stamp a denial on their claim. Many of the roofs I`ve inspected were only 7-10 yrs old decent to good shape as far as their shingles go etc but the insurance co. told the homeowners to go after the shingle manufacturer in small claims court. Of course, before anyone mentions it, there are always the extremes in roof condition before the storm and those I`m not addressing. I`m referring to only "good roofs" damaged by wind storms.
This has been happening at an alarming rate around here with other contractors and various insurers with pretty much the same scenarios in all. Of course the insurers would never get together and start denying things at will because that would be illegal as to collusion.....LMFAO.
We are not talking full roof coverage for most cases but in many cases after "their" contractor is done with his estimate it is miraculously just under your deductible and is so far off the real damage the homeowner just forgets laying a claim and pays for the damage himself............if he submits a claim it gets denied....this is AFTER their own contractor has done an estimate agreeing there was insured storm damage.


Anyone else notice this trend?

2 years ago for me they were on the verge of denying stating it was normal wear and tear and they never pay for shingles or people would wait 40 years and expect them to pay for the job.I was getting water damage and they backed down due to past claims for mold damage for other people that ended up costing them $$$$$.They paid almost 100% but the contractor tacked on $1600 I had to pay out of pocket.
My rates didn't go up but my parents bill doubled.Seems like they were getting billed for my house for 25 years while I was paying also.(it was originally listed on their policy as a second home) and the co never corrected the mistake.I didn't want to rock the boat so I never challenged it.Their policy was corrected and my premiums never went up except for the normal inflation coverage.My policy still shows no claims,knock wood.The shingles were 40+ years old and survived 2 hurricanes but storm sandy and the one after did it in.Shingles were 40+ years old.USA, so I have a feeling it's the same here.

Yup.......all of the roofs I inspected and quoted on had already been inspected by "their" contractors and cleared for partial payments and it was after that the companies in question stamped the deny button on them. Of the 7 I looked into and showed the homeowner how to lodge a complaint 3 got their money after more leakage, more damage and threatened lawsuit and 3 more are in transit. One policy was denied and then cancelled even tho the roof was only 11 yrs old, no previous claims and never missed a payment.....naturally his was the biggest roof with the most damage.LMAO.

I have never had a roof that lasted more then 12yrs even 25yr shingles failed in S.Ont also cobra.The grit falls off and then washes to the trough,you would think l used it for a highway with the wear.Those 3 tab ones shrink then leak,maybe the newer cedar looking ones are better.

The real test for the shingles regardless of their advertised "life" is the climate you`re in.....the bigger diversities in the weather the shorter the life span, also the black shingles wear much faster than lighter colors if all variables are the same. The shingles I`m talking about weren`t worn to the point of being bad.....they were torn off due to storm and wind damage making them insurable. There were indeed some with increased wear making them suspect but far and away they were in relatively good condition with little eaves residue. Those scenarios should have been covered by insurance.....and like zelig mentioned would be covered if you challenged your insurer hard enough and long enough.

I changed my roof tiles 9 years ago and along with new roof tiles I paid the extra money
and covered the entire roof with ice and water protect.

2 summers ago I noticed the tiles start to curl, I didn't do anything about it and last summer
the curls only got worse. My insurance company (Co-Operators) pretty much told me to FO

I called IKO customers service and they actually have a complaints department who asked
me to fill out a bunch of papers and take a bunch of pictures, send them to them so they
investigate after which they will send me their decision by mail. If they determine that the
tiles curling is their fault, they will refund me the cost of the tiles minus the time they were
on the roof. best case scenario for me is a refund of 50% of the tile ,, no refund for labor.

IKO is in a class action suit in the multi millions of dollars for falsely claiming tile life. A quick
google search will find what you're looking for.

As for me a got a quote and am changing my tiles ,, this time I'm going with cambridge

Actually I`ve had pretty decent feedback with success dealing with IKO where failings have occurred for customers.....they get 50% credit towards next purchase but ONLY if they buy more IKO shingles. Nobody that I know of covers labor in any of the warranties in roof work. Those "lifetime" shingles aren`t worth the paper the warranty is written on and last about the same as any and again that depends heavily on your climate and location. Most roofs last about 15 yrs unless they are black and sit in constant sun and that shortens their life considerably, also a roof over a roof(without stripping) is never a good idea.....those shingles will start to curl in 5 yrs.

I had an insulation company come and blow extra insulation in the attic.
I recently found out that the insulator blew insulation to the far edges
of the attic and covered the soffit and as a result, restricting the air flow.

which is one problem ...

the other is, the air vents are the short approx 4 inch type and don't provide
adequate air circulation ,, I am also changing those to the 2 foot type giving
me 1100 sq ft of air flow ,, I'll be adding 2 of those, one on each end of the roof

hopefully I wont have to change the tiles again

iko has a 2 page sheet on warranty and 90% of it is what they don't cover... if you have inadequate ventilation say good bye to warranty

trust me I know as I've used their products for over 30 years and was trained by the. on how to use their torch on

And on top of that it`s what THEY with THEIR rep. say is inadequate.....you can pretty much guess how that works out. All those "warranty" covered products have "outs" built in to them..........most often used is "it`s not our product, it`s the guy who installed it" no matter from shingles to dishwashers to pretty much anything covered under a warranty that has to be installed by a third party.
Look on a warranty from a Kenmore eg dishwasher etc etc...."warranty valid only if installed by a certified Sears tech"
