    Default Old Newbie

Been out of the scene for almost 2 decades. I was in back in the day when DSSFORUMS was still around (mid 2000's) Can't even remember the receiver I used to have
Anyway, they were just starting to change encryption so I gave up, but now, with these ridiculous prices out here, and too many dang streaming services, I would like to go back to "testing" again, but have no idea where to start. I never did get into the emu with the PC. Is that even possible nowadays? I know back then you had to have a subscription, to have the card.
Any steering in the right direction would be appreciated. I am in the PNW part of the US if that matters.

    Welcome to the fix.
Through the decades, I've tried to stay as informed as possible with "industry developments".There are no public card/hardware hacks that I know of.There are no hardware, software, emu or any other hacks short of key sharing.Call it testing if you want, but I don't consider key sharing as testing, but still a good way of watching basic tv for very little money. That reality lead us to IPTV, which gives you all the tv you want & more than sat ever did.It just isn't testing.Your fate is in someone elses hands.lol.
If you don't have reasonable internet, you will need it.If you can't get it, you will have to consider northern satellite access, as long as your in the foot print, but you will need at least basic internet even for that.In any case, it's all paid sharing.Lots of help here in any case.

Thank you for the info. I don't mind paying something, even if it's for basic TV like TBS, Discovery, etc. My internet sucks big time. We're on HughesNet and it is by far the worst ISP I have ever had. We're going to look in to T-Mobile home internet, as it is supposed to be fairly decent. As it is now Netflix is the only service we can stream without constant buffering every 30 seconds.

Now I guess I need to do some reading here to find what equipment I will need to purchase (laptop/desktop, or whatever) and who to purchase from that is reliable/trustworthy.

About 2.8 Mbps and .5 upload, depending on the time if day I do it. One speed test I did earlier today showed 22 Mbps, but the number I showed above was just now at 8PM. So it sucks big time, and it's unstable.

You're obliged to use iks with those speeds. It will work, but be unstable.I don't know where you live, but if in the U.S. you will need to be close to the Canadian border to get North programming. It's not like the old days of wide open tv:no ppv movies, but most ppv sports is there. The iks providers for north have been excellent, with very stable service.I have no comment on South service, because there isn't any.

I'm only 2 hours south of the Canadian border, in Eastern Washington state.
Thank you, I'll look into it, but I do plan on getting a better ISP soon. I wish SpaceX would tell me they're ready to hook me up

for iptv if you want to watch 4k you'll need more than 25mbps d/l speed

2 hours south @ 60 mph puts you in the fringe area for sat signal. It will take a larger well aimed dish to get Expressvue from there.

look into hitting sats 81 and 92. THey are obtainable in almost into Oregon. You should be able to use them. IKS uses very little internet and would work great for you. Look for IKS compatible receivers. You will have to purchase a north IKS service, but they run great and pennies on the dollar in comparison to what you have now.

Wow, that's in my neck of the woods. I'm 20 minutes North of Spokane.
