Football announcers are under a lot of pressure to be discreet when a ref makes a terrible call. They'll say something like, "well, that was a tough call" or "that's a call that might have gone either way," and then they won't talk about it again. They are expected to always protect the NFL's virginal image. But the top announcing duo on tv, Troy Aikman and Jack Buck, simply had had enough after watching the refs clearly back Kansas City against Houston after two crucial roughingthe passer calls. In the first one, Will Anderson hit Patrick Mahomes in the chest as he was releasing the ball and they called roughing, claiming head to head contact when there clearly wasn't any. In the second, Mahomes took off as a runner, and as he was being tackled pretended to slide. The two Texans tacklers hit each other and fell on him, and of course the refs called roughing. Despite knowing they would be fined for telling the truth after the game at their press conferences, Head Coach DeMeco Ryans and Will Anderson held nothing back. But what was really great was that Buck and Aikman not only were outraged at the time, but Aikman in particular kept talking about it and criticizing the calls. It was refreshing to see one announcer, and a highly-respected Hall of Famer, stand up for the integrity of the game. It's bad enough that NFL refs are so incompetent, but when they are obviously biased in favor of one team, that's a worse thing. Thank you Troy. You'll probably be fired or demoted for this, but thank you for trying.
