As the recipient of MotorTrend's Car of the Year in 1969, the model was well-regarded for its wallet-friendly performance at the time, and novelties like its Road Runner graphics, beep-beep horn , and Coyote Duster air cleaner mean that it commands strong appeal today.

Although the Road Runner was a quick car even with the base 383 — thanks to its use of 440 Super Commando heads, intake, cam, and exhaust manifold — it was the 426-cubic-inch Hemi (a spendy $714 option) that truly unlocked its performance potential. Running F70-15 tires, Muscle Car Confidential took a 1969 Road Runner specced with a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic and 4.10 gears to a neck-snapping 13.32-second quarter at 107.65 mph.
