My cordless works but I have to wait for the dial tone before I start to dial and dial slowly. If I don't do it this was I get a message saying you must dial 1 plus the area code blah blah blah....

Besides the dialing issue mine works ok I tend to get a lot of lagging at times but that could be related to the old pc running the device.

I even bought a cheap corded phone and same thing, I hear the dial tone, press any number of keys on the phone keypad and the dial tone just continues...I've tried 3 unidens and one emerson phone

ive had magic jacks for a few years now and they definitely do the trick now that htey have canadian numbers its been better. i sent them to my kids in different cities in ontario as they are students and you pay 2 years at a time and they dont have to worry about a monthly bill and they also have no excuses for not calling their mom. i use to pay about 50bucks a month and figured i'll get rid of the long distance plan which is only like 20bucks a month but figure it out after 3 months the magic jack and yearly cost is paid and now its gravy for the rest of the time, i mean its nickels and dimes but its still 180bucks'ish a year. At the end of the day it just goes to show how the providers really stick it to the people and we need to see more of this so the cost of things can drop

I just set mine up last week and it works well

the 5 minute thing might turn people off but for someone like myself that only uses a cell, it's good to have as a backup vs actually paying for something such as magicjack

google icall to find the site
there is a fee they want, is that $9.95 a month or a year?

    Default majic jack in canada

    pros and cons to mj
pros; a good alternative to greedy phone providers.
    cdn numbers are available.
cons; no faxing, cant use pc when on phone,(causes audio dropouts)
works best with corded phone, recently cant dial cdn 1-800 numbers

Mj has started blocking a lot of numbers with rural phone companies. Read about it at the unofficial MJ site...
    Code:
    majicjacksupport.com
New toy on the market is the nettalk duo which connects thru your router so the PC doesn't need to be on all the time. A little more expensive but they have a 50% off code til the 15th. Ordered one a few days ago.

the price might be different if you're not in the US but I think it's $10/month which is a bit steep compared to MJ but I'd never pay for it, the limited free service is fine by me

just google it and try the free version if you need to make an emergency phone call (such as calling your cell to hear it ring if you happen to lose it, or if your cell battery dies, etc)

its not a very good phone replacement but in an emergency it'll do
    thanks for your post, man

As much as I like the MJ, I have recently noticed the toll free number issue mentioned by Montesa. They used to work, but don't seem to be lately. So... if you make a lot of toll free number calls, you might want to reconsider. I've recently also noticed problems calling TFN's on my cell phone too (Bell Mobility). Has anyone else had any problems?
I use gethuman.com to locate alternate phone numbers to businesses that sometimes bypass the automated robo-answering hell they all use these days. Also helps locate TFN numbers that still work with my cell phone. Another useful tool to know about. Darn shame everything has to be so complicated anymore.

And for that simple purpose, the magic jack is not a phone. It is great if you are away from home, a neat help... but it does not replace a normal phone. Skipe 2 would be a perfect name.
Most people leave their pc on all the time so you can recieve calls if you left it on.

The echo comes from your MJ settings. I have a friend that had echo and he went and changed a setting and it was fine..

Are you sure its not set to use a headset ?
There is a repair option too, not sure if you tried that.

I have had MJ for a year now and dont know what I ever did without it. Saves alot of dough in long distance.
Its been more reliable than my phone line ...Seriously !!

Im thinking on springing for the extra 10 bucks for a Canadian number and losing the land line. Between MJ and my cell, I dont need to spend another 40 bucks a month for nothing..
